Advanced Placement & AVID Salem High School

What is Advanced Placement? Advanced Placement (AP) classes are college level courses designed by College Board in a variety of subjects that students may take while in high school.    AP courses are taught by high school teachers and provide students with the opportunity to study in-depth at the collegiate level.    *In order to earn college credit, students must take and score a 3 or higher on the AP exam.
 Advanced Placement Opportunities in Fine Arts Salem offers the following courses:  AP Music Theory: Structured to develop skills in written and aural music theory. It also provides understanding of elements and structure of music.     AP Art & Design: Encourages students to engage in creative processes that involve critical thinking, artistic practice and problem-solving.    Grade Level Recommendations: 11th Grade and 12th grade    Interests could include becoming a: professional musician, composer, illustrator, animator.
Advanced Placement Opportunities in English Salem offers the following courses:  AP Seminar: Provides students with skills in research, analysis, evidence based argumentation, collaboration, writing and presentation.  Grade Level Recommendation: 10th grade (replaces 10th Grade Lit or World Lit)    AP Language: Develops skills reading, writing and critical thinking, with a focus on analyzing and crafting arguments and expository texts.  Grade Level Recommendations: 11th grade (replaces 11 Lit or American Lit)    AP Literature: Engages students in reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature, encourages students to explore meaning, style and themes  Grade Level Recommendations: 12th grade (replaces 12 Lit or British Lit)    Interests could include: Journalism, Communications, Author, Script Writer, Public Relations
Advanced Placement Opportunities in Math			Salem  offers the following course:  AP Pre-Calculus: Focuses on the study of function, analytical geometry, trigonometry and the introduction of limits and other calculus concepts.    Grade Level Recommendations: 12th Grade     Interests could include: Engineer, Software Developer, Mathematician, Economist
Advanced Placement Opportunities in Career Technical Education Salem offers the following course:  AP Computer Science Principles: Introduces students to foundational concepts and challenges them to explore how computing and technology can impact the world.     Computer science is the engine that powers technology, productivity and innovation that drive the world.    Grade Level Recommendations: 10th Grade, 11th Grade, 12th Grade    Interests could include: Programming, Animation, Cybersecurity, Forensic Computer Analyst, Game Design
Advanced Placement Opportunities in Social Studies Salem offers the following courses:  AP Government: Develop understanding of US Government and politics through analysis of data and text based sources.    Grade Level Recommendation: 9th Grade (replaces American Government)    AP World History: Develop understanding of world history from 1200 CE to present through analyzing historical sources and learning to make connections and craft historical arguments.    Grade Level Recommendation: 10th Grade (replaces World History)    Interests could include: Lawyer, Politician, Lobbyist, Professor, Historian
Advanced Placement Opportunties in Social Studies  Salem offers the following courses:  AP US History: Provides comprehensive understanding of the history of the US from the pre-Columbian period to present and emphasizes the development of historical thinking skills.    Grade Level Recommendations: 11th Grade (replaces US History)    AP Macroeconomics: Focuses on the economy as a whole and examines economic concepts, theories, and policies that affect economic performance and behavior on a national and global scale.    Grade Level Recommendations: 12th Grade (replaces Economics)    Interest could include: Policy Analyst, Archivist, Political Scientist, International Relations, Financial Analyst
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) AVID is a program that supports student academics and provide opportunities for students to develop knowledge and skills that will benefit them in college and their future, such as organizational skills and note taking.    AVID provides academic and social support to ensure student success in high school, college and  careers.
